Hi, I'm new here, great site btw!!

I have taken in a horse on trial. She will no doubt be in better shape no matter if we decide to keep her on not. Anyhow, I figure she needs about 200 #'s. This is a guestimate and I could be wrong! I have been giving her 4 cups safechoice, with 1 cup rice bran and 1/2 cup of oil with flax. She gets free choice orchard and a nice big flake of really good quality alfalfa. Can I up the fat intake? I've been doing this for about 1 1/2 weeks. She is just starting to shine, so that is a good sign. I love cleaning up this horse. She deserves it. Is it ok to feed rice bran everyday in a larger quantity? Maybe 2 cups bran and 1 cup oil per day? Can I keep increasing the rice bran and oil to a certain amount? I add water to the whole mixture and she loves it. I don't know how this happened to this mare, but she really is lovely. I don't want to add sugar to her diet. Thanks for any suggestions!

Welcome Robert,
As long as all other nutrient requirements are met more oil is fine, if your horse will eat it. Oils and fats suffer from palatability problems so some horses will not eat well at certain levels. As long as the horse is on at least as much alfalfa by weight more bran should be fine too. You will find articles on fat in the horses diet and bran in the Nutrition section but always start with the Overview article for the background.

Thank you, Dr O. I will go ahead and increase the bran and oil a little. She tolerates the oil well.
