I have a 9 year old mare that had a foal in the spring of 2000. She has free access to horse mineral block 24/7. She is fed pellets and pasture grass. What is concerning is that when she is in an area of open dirt, she will spend some time ignoring her feed and lick the dirt. Obviously this is some indication of a mineral deficiency, but what and how should it be supplemented?

Hello Ken,
No I disagree that this is an indication of a deficiency and boredom is far more likely. For more see the posts under, Care for Horses: Nutrition: Horses Eating Things They Shouldn't: Pica, Coprophagia, Trees.
