Hi! I was wondering where is the best place to do the vaccines? Neck, hind, breast...? In the case of a foal, where is it best to give his first shot? Thanks. Valerie |

Hello Valerie, There really is no best place as each has its strengths and weaknesses and depends on several factors most importantly is tractability. I strongly recommend you avoid the croup (top of the butt). Abscesses up here drain really poorly. Otherwise any large muscle belly that you have access to, is fair game. DrO |

Thank you DrO. I was just wondering since I have seen different vet use different places. Valerie |

Though I discourage self vaccination for reasons we have discussed elsewhere, I know there are incidences where it is necessary. I will see if I can put together such an article in the near future on injection techniques. My own niece (semiprofessional horsewomen) abscessed her foal last month and it was completely preventable. DrO |
