Those big water troughs can be a real pain to clean out. And goldfish don't keep the algae from coming back, just slow it down. Give the goldfish to a child and clean out your trough. Then once a month put a 1" chlorine tab (the kind they use for hot tubs) into the bottom on the trough. It won't add enough chlorine to hurt your horse (remember, most city water is chlorinated) but it will keep the algae from growing! Another advantage to it is that when you go to a horse show, your horse will not refuse the strange water at a new place if you put a few drops of bleach into his bucket. It will taste just like home!

How much water are you adding the chlorine tab to? I have large plastic waterers in my field and am interested in trying this.

In other words one tablet per how many gallons of water???

Thanks

I have large galvanized steel water troughs in the pastures. I'd guess about 50 gallons each and I put one 1' tab in once a month.
