Has anyone used the Buckeye Gro' N Win for horses mainly on grass and grass hay? I have always used Blue Seal but was thinking of switching to Gro'N Win, but then I just read the protein is 32%!! Am I missing something here, or is that an awfully high amount of protein to be feeding?

It depends on the rest of your diet Stephany. There are many situations where such a high protein concentrate makes sense. Let's say you have a 600 lb yearling that is on medium quality timothy hay. The foal can eat about 25% of his bodyweight daily or about 15 lbs of feed. Off the top of my head I would guess the recommended amount of daily protein (14% of the total diet) to be around 2 lbs daily. Since a medium quality timothy only contains 8% protein it supplies only 1.2 lbs protein. If you use a 10% protein feed to make up the difference that is 8 lbs of concentrate! Obviously in such a situation a very high protein concentrate helps balance the protein in the diet while maintaining a high forage intake.

I've used the Buckeye Gro' N Win for several of my youngsters that were on questionable quality grass hay. It's helped a bunch. The key to remember is that you don't feed nearly as much of the Gro' N Win as you would of a sweet feed. I start my foals at about 1/2 cup a day and work them up to the recommendation on the bag. I don't think I've had to feed more than a pound or 2 a day for the fastest growing foal. I do add oats when I've reached the recommended amount on the bag, and the youngster needs more weight. Adding oats is also recommended by Buckeye.

When I've had older horses on the Gro' N Win, I think they've gotten about a pound a day, split into 2 feedings. I add oats to one mare's ration but not to the other's. I also add a 1/2 cup of Ultimate Finish to each horse's grain, to up the oil content.
