Hi Dr. O,

I had asked my vet to give my horse a Vetalog shot for her summer itchies and I realized she was also due for her West Nile. When I asked him to do the West Nile he advised me to hold off a few weeks because one will negate the other. I was watching a different vet vaccinate a different horse a few weeks ago and he gave them together. Is there any truth to this? If so which one wipes out the other?

Thanks
Janine

It is possible Janine that the concomitant use of a corticosteroid will decrease the effectiveness of a vaccine, so I agree with your vet: do not give them together unless it cannot be avoided. The steroid works by decreasing the immune systems reactivity while the vaccine works by stimulating the immune system.

What actually happens when given together is a complicated largely unstudied question where the answer probably varies with steroid dose, type steroid used, the particular vaccine and the how well the individual horse reacts to the vaccine.
