Posted on Thursday, Nov 2, 2006 - 1:38 pm: Hi Guys! I'm wondering if there is anyone from northern NJ that can give me some tips on testing soil/grass/property,etc? I currently live in the Metro area and considering a house with 10 acres in northern NJ. It's level property which is attractive, but no horses on the land. This is a first for me and don't really know where to start in regard to picking out horse-friendly land. Is there anyone from Sussex County who can give me some tips on starting a small horse farm in the area? We're thinking 2 horses (may be additional in the future )and a few goats. Tips from anyone (not necessarily from NJ) whose gone through this would be helpful. Many Thanks! |

Most of my neighbors own horses and there are plenty of boarding stables, riding clubs, etc. Several "Rails to Trails" parks provide long distance trails, too.The Sussex County Agricultural Extension service can give you info on soil tests, etc. So can Rutgers University equine studies web site. You'll find that the soil is quite acid, and yearly lime treatments for pastures are the norm. What town is the property in? I am in Stillwater with part of my property in Fredon Township. Erika |

Posted on Friday, Nov 3, 2006 - 9:21 am: Hi Erika. Thank you so much for responding. We're looking at properties in Wantage, as it's easy access Routes 23 and 15. I work in NYC and my husband works in Newark, so we have to stay somewhat close. We're still going to have to face a hectic commute, though... What are the names of the stables that you know of that I could check out for saddleseat? Also, do you know of a website for trails? Right now I'm riding at Waterford Farm, a Morgan breeding/training facility in Buttzville. It's a hike for me, but definitely worth it, Kathy's a wonderful trainer. How long have you been in Sussex County? I'm very excited about moving to the area, this will be a dream come true for us... We're looking at 5 more homes this weekend, but I have my heart set on 1 home right off 23 on 10 acres that would be perfect... If you don't mind and have a free minute or two, could you share your routine for vaccinations, shoeing, hay bales, etc? I'm trying to do all my homework now before we start our plan for horses. This is a GREAT site to do so... Again, thank you, your information is most appreciated...Silvia |

We thought about moving out west, but family and friends are here, so we decided to stay kind of local, but horse country is a must for me... Hope you move back!Silvia |
