Unchecked large strongyles, also called blood worms, limit the life span of horses. Over years chronic damage to the organs and particularly the arteries feeding the bowel with blood build up and through aneurysm or infarction result in an acute lethal colic. This article discusses the life cycle and diagnosis of this parasite including photos of all the life stages, and has links to treatment of these parasites.
