My 13 year old half-warmblood mare has had miserable heats all of her adult life. After trying implants, etc., I put her on Regumate about 3 or 4 years ago. Recently, she has been showing symptoms of heat anyway, and my vet said I might have to increase the dosage to double. I opted, instead, to take her off the Regumate for a while, thinking she would return to "normal" and I could then resume the Regumate at the usual dosage (11 cc's /day). She has come into heat once, sans Regumate, kicking constantly despite kicking chains, and rubbing an 8 inch section of her tail down to skin and blood. Is there anything I can do to relieve her symptoms without doubling up on the Regumate?

Have you had her checked for a granulosa cell tumour of the ovaries. If will produce behavior like you describe (see the reproduction section). If the ovaries are normal you should consider having her spayed. The operation is called a colopotomy and can be done in the standing horse.
