What type of medication is used on proud flesh? I have heard wonderdust works well. My Appendix cut her pastern in a trailer accident and had to have 10 stiches. I would also like to minimize scarring.

To Dr R.N.Oglesby

I am a student studying Equine Science at Hartpury College, Associate Facalty of University of the West of England, Gloucestershire in England and i was wondering if you might be able to help me.

I am currently writing an independant study on the immunologic response of the equine skin, and i am particularly interested in the Namibian Warm bloods allergy to flies. I was wondering if you might be able to give me the scientific name for this disease, as well as any other information relating to this disease, and treatments involved. I would be very grateful and would appreciate any other contact addresses that might be of any help.
Their particular allergy to the flies includes extensive proud flesh growth.

Yours sincerelly Olivia Carolan

Namibian Warmblood fly allergy which results in extensive proud flesh formation? Sorry you have me caught short on this one, I do not see anything in the scientific literature either. Where did you see a reference to this disease? It sounds more like habronemiasis which is not really an allergy, but a response to the fly larvae.

I like to tell all of you that are fighting with proud fresh that the very best thing to use is plain white lime. I know it sounds crazy, but my grandfather used it and is works great. I'v used this method many times since and nothing works beter.
The trick is not to wash if possible and add lime twice a day to the affected area for a week, with are without stiches it doesn't mater, remember not to wash, it will look terrible after two days, just keep adding the lime. Trust me, I know its sounds unbelievable, but it does work and it cheap.

Hello Sandy,
We discuss the use of lime on proud flesh in the article on proud flesh. It is not our first recommendation however. To find out why see Equine Diseases: Skin Diseases: Wounds: First Aid, Care, and Proud Flesh: The Treatment of Proud Flesh or Exuberant Granulation Tissue.
