I appreciate the information on parasites. Didnt' realize how uninformed I was. I still have not seen anything on hookworms? Will the strongid-c kill hookworms?
Thanks

Hello Lola,
In horses we call hookworms strongyles and all our recommended dewormers will kill them but for the particulars of efficacy and mechanism of action see the article on dewormers.

Does any one have a picture refference of any type of parasites? i have looked in all my vet manuels, and they give me lots of wonderful in formation, but no decription of what the worms look like or pictures of them. I found what looks like an earth worm on my manuer pile. It is about three inches long, bleach white, and turned like a hook on one end, but smooshed on the other end. Is this a horse parasite? maybe a parasite from a stray cat, or a bleached out earth worm?

You will find pictures of all the worms, in the articles on individual worms at, » Equine Diseases » Colic and GI Diseases » Parasites and Worms.

Hello Angela,
Run a search on www.google.com and type in hookworms. I did after reading this post and was positively horrified. These things have teeth! Time for a refresher course on deworming programs and pasture paddock manure management. Maybe you just had a cat or dog do their business on top of the communal horse pile, but it would be worth investigating. Good place to start is here.

Susan, it is certain her worm was not a hookworm. It is about 100 times too big. However there are several worms of the horse that it could be, perhaps using the pictures referenced above she can distinquish them.

Thank you for the info on where to find the pictures. It looks like it could be a male pin worm. I have checked all the horses and can't find any sign that anyone has been rubbing thier tail. Can a cat carry this worm as well? I just wormed the everyone last week, if I find someone rubbing in the next few days, should i reworm them, or wait until the vet makes his vist at the end of this month for shots?

This last time I wormed with Safeguard. I usually worm with Rotation and alternate with Zimecterin every three months year round.

I looked them over an there is so much there. I seem to be on a simular program to allot of other people, but it sound like the rules are changing. Any short clues and information or recomendations would be nice. Thanks, Angie

One more question, do cats carry pinworms? I have not found any more and no one shows signs of having them?

Not the horse type, but I have to admit, I don't remember if there is a pinworm of cats and my small animal associate has gone to a horse show today.
