Dear Dr. O--

Now that I'm completing my gastrogard series ($$$$yikes$$$$$), I'm intent on not repeating this again.

My first bout with ulcers with this horse was last spring after he had shipped over from Europe (not surprising--he's pretty high strung) I treated for 21 days with Ranitidine, but never scoped to confirm that we had ulcers or that they were "cured". This time, I did have him scoped, and saw those little babies for myself---and I will have him scoped again to make sure they are all gone in a few more weeks.

I realize that if I keep him in the pasture grazing all day that I probably won't have a recurrence, but that isn't going to happen. We regularly go to shows, clinics, trail rides and lessons.

I am interested in developing a realistic feeding & management program incorporating small meals, lots of hay, use of Ranitidine or other antacids. Have any studies been done with post-ulcer horses to determine the best approach?

Laura

Hello Laura,
Not with relation to diet and management. The only post ulcer research has been concerning incomplete resolution due to stopping therapy to early. However we think the research on ulcer formation and prevention applies to horse post treatment as well. I have updated the recent scientific reports and wrote up a small review about interesting findings with alfalfa and ulcers. Check out the article and if you have questions, post them here.

I read the article and just need clarification. My horse was just diagnosed so I want to know what changes to make. She currently is feed grass hay/grain 2x a day. Should I switch to free choice grass hay with alfalfa/grain 2x a day? Or is it one or the other.
