A new horse at the stable where I board has a peculiar habit. I wonder if anyone has any tips about correcting/treating it. A twelve year old gelding bay apparently had a cracked tooth in the past, and he started storing food in his cheek. He was probably to keep the air off of the cracked tooth, which has since been corrected. You can see a lump about the size of a golf ball on his cheek! And when his owner digs up there to get it out, it is very foul smelling, like the worst baby poop you have ever smelled. She squirts listerine up in there after digging it out. But as soon as he gets near his hay, he packs it in there again. Does anyone have any experience with this behavior? |

This is common horse behavior when horses have tooth problems and probably indicates either: 1) that the area is still painful or 2) that he has trouble chewing his hay so he soaks it first. DrO |

Dear Diane, Thanks for posting this question. You, and HorseAdvice.Com have been a great resource! We recently acquired a 22 year-old Clydesdale/Paint cross that had been abandoned for the last 2 years. Before that he had never had parasite control, vet care, hoof care or feed. He existed in a swampy pasture with the goodwill of horse owners that boarded their horses nearby. He has horrible hooks and waves for teeth and pockets his food on one side. We are waiting to float his teeth until he is parasite free and a little stronger. After one week he has a little spark in his eyes! Thanks, Dr. O, for always being there for my questions!
