Posted on Friday, Mar 15, 2002 - 11:38 am: I am looking for a broodmare. I found a nice Warmblood mare. She is 18 and has been out in a paddock alone and hasn't been worked. She has lost most of her muscling along her topline and hindquarters. Oh, and she has a huge hay belly. Not exactly a pretty picture but it's obvious she is a quality mare that has been ignored. She is a maiden. When I picked up her tail I was amazed to see (OK, I guess it's easier to type this than say it out loud. ) her anus was really sunken in. I could easily fit a softball in there....not that I would.... Her vulva was normal vertical on the bottom 2/3's and the top 1/3 was much closer to horizontal than vertical. I have never seen anything like it. So my questions: With conditioning can this improve and can she be a productive broodmare? We would be breeding with fresh or frozen semen. She is really sweet and was a top show hunter. She seems to miss the fussing and human contact. Thanks ~Barbara |

Posted on Friday, Mar 15, 2002 - 2:20 pm: I'm not a vet, but I also picked up an under fed mare (who was pregnant at the time). Her top line was also pretty bare, her chest was scrawny, her neck was hollow and you could see her ribs. Her big belly was due to the baby. One other thing I noticed too, was that her anus was sunken in as well. In the two month's I've had her, with careful feeding she's put on weight over her ribs, chest and neck. Her anus filled back out to a mostly normal position as well. Her top line I know wont get better with out some work but we're unable to do any because of her pregnancy. That's just my experience with my mare! Good luck with your mare. She sounds like she'd be getting a really good owner! ~Sharon |

Posted on Friday, Mar 15, 2002 - 4:36 pm: SharonThanks so much for the reply. Your story gives me hope. I hate to ask but was your mare really sunken in? You can put a softball in this mare. She seems so sad. She perked up for a minute when I was done riding her (very lightly) and she thought she was getting a treat. She went back to her sad self once she realized I didn't have anything for her. I felt really bad. She is in a paddock all alone with no grass. I will see what DrO thinks. ~B |

Posted on Saturday, Mar 16, 2002 - 8:49 am: Barbara,Yes, she was that sunken in too. Her vulva was nearly horizontal on the top half as well. It made me worried, thinking she'd have problems during labor. Just as I was really getting worried she started to fill back in. |

Posted on Monday, May 6, 2002 - 12:10 pm: Just wanted to give an update on this mare. Her overall condition has improved dramatically. Her coat is shiny and her anus has come out almost to where it should be. I don't know if she will ever be 100% normal but she looks so much better. AND........she was just checked in foal today! We have a great vet who did a great job! |
