I was told that since my mare was older (born '89) that I needed to use the old timers method of getting her to come into season for breeding. The person suggested using a saline wash and put in just as you would the semen? He raised show horses and swears that this will bring the mare into season. I have not discussed this with my vet as it seems quite unordinary. I was also told that after the horse was bred to place genicide in the womb for protecting the mare from any bacteria from the breeding. I hate to sound ignorant but would like an answer to these questions or were these people just testing my common sense??? thanks |

First a 89 horse would not really be considered an older mare here and should not require any special procedures to get her to cycle. Placing saline in the vagina or uterus will probably not bring your mare into heat. However, fooling around back there may give you a clue if she is in heat (see Equine Reproduction: Breeding and Foaling: Heat Detection, Ovulation Prediction, and Timing Insemination). I am not sure what genicide is but if there is no indication of trouble I see no need for such an infusion. Lola, what makes you think your mare is not forming follicles? DrO |

Hi, I'm a new member: thank you for this site. My 16 year old Hannoverian mare has foaled once four years ago. It was a hand breeding and no probs with pregnancy. Within a year after foaling, she has developed chronic diarrhea, and has been treated with homeopathic tinctures with occasional successes. We were 8 months through cold season to spring and she developed diarrhea again mid summer. This is a two- fold question: she has not been able to conceive since the last foal. We ultra-sounded her and the vet felt she was in foal but absorbed it. I am going to try the Pepto-Bismol treatment to see if we can arrest the diarrhea, but could this condition prevent a mare conceiving? (She will also have more normal stools interspersed with the diarrhea. She has not lost condition. She is the "alpha mare" at the farm and seems easily stressed by having other horses in her space. Extremely dominant! Thanks Kelly |

Possibly the diarrhea is contaminating the vulva and the increase bacteria is resulting in a low grade endometritis? How to go about diagnosing this and other causes of infertility see our infertility subtopic: Equine Diseases » Reproductive Diseases » Trouble Settling Mares & Stallion Infertility.
