Hello! I came out to the barn tonight, and my horse's tongue was black (on the top side only). Made me think it had been from something he ate, and as he also seemed lethargic I thought I'd check to see if I should be concerned. Is there anything anyone knows of that would cause this? Some weed? He doesn't have an elevated temp, 99.6 degrees, but I just want to make sure I shouldn't be more concerned. Thanks!

Hi Daisy, my horses had black tongue synDrOme for years before I figured out what it was, my horses get it from grooming each other especially in the spring when they are shedding and all that winter crud is coming out of their coats. If your horse is turned out with other horses that might be it. Just a guess.

Daisy, I have been perplexed by my husband's horse's black tongue for two years in a row now. He only gets it when he is out in the pasture all day. It is particularly prevalent through spring and summer, seems to diminish in fall, is not at all present in winter. Other horses in the same pasture will get it a little bit now and again, but Austin will have it day after day and it is REALLY BLACK. (He comes in at night and by morning it is back to normal.) I have given up being too alarmed by it since this is his second season here and it does not seem to be affecting him in other negative ways. I have speculated that it might be related to clover but I honestly have no idea (it is definitely not related to grooming other horses...) Let me know if you find out what it is! (Where do you live, by the way? I am in the northeast, on the ocean, with very lush clover rich pasture)
