Everyone talks about "Scoping" a horse. One person says that the horse can only be scoped after exercise. Another says only after exercise and the horse bleeds. My friend says her vet can scope them at rest and tell what is going on because of the type of scope she has. Can you clear this up at all for me? My horse bled today for the first time in her life. After light exercise, and this horse has been used hard for five years. Just a little blood in the mucus, but I want to have her scoped but don't want to spend alot of money on my friends vet (she is VERY expensive) if scoping at rest is not useful.

Hello Nancy,
Concerning EIPH horses are scoped after exercise as bleeding does not occur at other times. You do not have any information on your horses in your profile but unless you are racing your horse over distance EIPH is unlikely, see Equine Diseases: Respiratory System: Nose Bleeds: Epistaxis for more on this.

I barrel race, but certainly wasn't barrel racing at the time. I was just loping around my arena at home on a very warm humid day, THINKING about barrel racing!!!
