Discussion on Red bumps in the mouth

My daughter just this evening noticed some red "blotches" in her mares mouth. They are not raised, they blanch normally but then become red again. They do not appear to be causing her any discomfort (other than having us shove a flashlight in her mouth, which didn't impress her one darn bit!)and she is definitely not off her food. There has been no change in feed and she is getting a good quality grass hay. For supplements she gets vitastress, glucosamine plus, probiotic and 1 cup of oats daily. It has been very hot here the last few days - 31C, which is about 10C above our "normal" temps. Any ideas on what these blotches could represent. Of course, we are leaving on holidays in 24 hours, so just something more for my kid to worry about while we are away. The stable manager will keep on an eye on the horse, and we have alerted her as to her findings and if they seem to be getting worse, or if the horse goes off her feed the vet will be called immediately - in the meantime I am looking for some info to soothe my kid's jangled nerves. Thanks

How big are the blotches, what is there general shape, and how are they distributed, Janis? This is unlikely to be a serious problem if there are no systemic signs, did you take the horses temperature?

The horses temp was normal - all vital signs were. The spots are on her gums - upper and lower - they are not raised, no pustules, no exudate, just blotchy spots -if I were to equate it to human I would say it looks like my face (I'm quite fair) after I've been crying! I suspect since she has been having quite a bit of grass lately (we only just got rid of our snow in the last few weeks so everything is late coming)that she may just have some kind of mild allergic reaction to some grass or thistle she has grabbed onto. This horse is much beloved - and you may remember had colic surgery about 2 years ago, from which she recovered COMPLETELY, then last year had occult sarcoids removed just before we left for holidays, so my daughter WORRIES over every little thing. My general feeling is that it isn't very serious - maybe a reaction to clover or something?

I still am having trouble picturing these and do not know the cause, but with a normal temperature, pulse, and respiratory rate I think a wait and see while keeping an eye on them will be fine.

We're now back from holidays and thought I would let you know that the red marks have disappeared. Must have been something she dipped her mouth into I guess.
