My 11 yr old thoroughbred, Charlie, has moderate DJD in his right front knee. My farrier noted that his right front foot does not take much weight as his foot is not as wide as his left front - which probably makes perfect sense due to his joint problem. The frog grooves in his right front are very deep. He was in a stall at his last barn about 22 hours a day. I have just moved him to a new barn that has turnout about 8 hours a day (which he needs for his allergies). Interestingly, other discussions in this section indicate thrush as being common. Charlie's frog is VERY dry - it almost seems to be withering up. The vet said to use Forshner's Hoof Packing -but not during wet weather(?). I bought it but have not used it yet. I suspect that this dryness is caused by being on shavings most of the day. Since he is now turned out for more hours of the day - what should I look for? When should I use the hoof packing? Can this stuff cause a new problem?

I would rejoice in the dry frog on the contracted hoof. A very common problem os such feet is when the area in the deep crack becomes moist allowing thrush to develop. I don't think I would do anything but them again I cannot see the condition myself.
