Hello everyone, I was just in my local tack store trying to find some furacin (again, no luck), but they *did* have several jars of Nolvasan ointment. VERY spendy, but from what I understand, worth it?? Let me know if anyone would like a jar, I'd be happy to buy it & ship it to you (prepayment of course ;)) Dr.O - is this stuff better to use on a open wound than a NFZ ointment?

I love the stuff, and seem to use it daily on the bites, scrapes and cuts my guys seem to inflict on each other - no not bad horse care, just young hijinks. However, these are all superficial cuts, not deep or more than an inch across at any time of hair or skin removed and rarely is there even any pus involved. Though some bite wounds have scared me with change purse size swellings under the skin around cuts. I first wash cut with Nolvasan scrub or Hibiclens (twice as strong, human version of same stuff) then gob on the Nolvasan. Swelling usually gone by next day or if really bad by third day. Two to three days of daily Nolvasan ointment use and then as scabs heal and peel only once every few days. I even used it with good results on a puncture wound under my yearling's jaw after twice daily scrubbing and squeezing. I call my boys the Blue polka dot gang in honor of its frequent use. And as for expense, a little goes a long way. I paid close to $20 for my jar in late Winter and am only half way through it. While my small jar of Swat that only gets used on really fly attracting wounds or fly bumps on young sensitive chests is more than halfway gone during approximately same period.

Good luck finding the perfect wound treatment.

Yes, I prefer it over furacin ointment though there are times I prefer furacin spray, see the articles on first aid and long term wound care where we compare and contrast various wound care treatments.

Fiona, your gang could be the PINK and Blue polka-dot gang if you just get the right color Swat. You make me remember some friends from years back, whom we named for their various favorite treatments: Corona Don
Reducine Rosey
Patty Poultice
Fiona, you'll have to switch to Furacin if you want to make the list....leave the Nolvasan to Nancy.
