We just had a horse die for no known reason. She was fine two days ago and then last night she seemed a little weak and unsteady and not too interested in food. We watched her through the night and there was little change. This morning she still seemed weak. She was cold and so my husband tried to lead her into the sun and she just fell to the ground and would not get up. Within a matter of ten minutes she was dead. The only other symptom was that this morning she was wheezing. Could this have been pneumonia? Any other ideas on what could have caused this? We are heartbroken. She was a two year old paint and very sweet.

Thanks,
Angela

I'm so sorry, Angela. What a shock, and how heartbreaking.

Were you able to take her temp at any point? Are you able to have a necropsey done, or is it too late? That might be one way to find out what killed her.

I hope you're able to solve this. It might ease your grief.

My deep condolences Angela. Unfortunately weakness and a wheezing noise are not specific for any disease as the noise may just be from the effort of breathing by a weak horse. It will take a necropsy to possibly identify the cause of death. Of course at this point there is concern about the other horses so be sure they are monitored closely and check the environment carefully for anything amiss.

Thank you for the condolences. The vet will be coming out this afternoon to check on the other horses. I am hoping all is well and this was just a problem with Dancer. We had only had her for about 5 months and she was very underweight when we got her. She had put on a good deal of weight and was really beginning to look and act very healthy so it is a mystery to me what could have happened. She has already been buried so we will not be performing a necropsy. I am just praying that the vet finds the other horse in good health and that this was a problem with just one of our horses. Again, thank your for your sympathy.
