Posted on Monday, Jan 8, 2007 - 9:33 pm: Levi has had a crack for several months now on the outside of his bad foot. The farrier has been putting epoxy glue in the crack to help keep his shoes on. Today he put the shoes on, and did not want to put the glue in the crack again. He thinks that that it is retarding the growth of healthy hoof wall. The hoof wall is completely chipped off. He is on supplements, and I put some thrush medicine on it today. Is there anything that I should be putting in this crack to keep it from getting bacteria or gunk in it?I am going to try to post pics

Farrier filled it and put something that looked like a clamp on it, then filed a crease at the top of it to keep it from growing upwards. He then put a wedge pad and shoe with built up and extended heel on the foot to support the heel and to give more "heel" area. It took quite a few months, I can't remember just how many, but seems like maybe 6 mos., until it grew out. The horse is now barefoot and getting trimmed every 4 wks. to see how he does. I don't know how deep Levi's crack is, but this one was so deep it bled a little. The first time the farrier treated the hoof, he cleaned the entire hoof, then the crack with anteseptic solution, and put an antibiotic paste under the patch. I wonder if there some covering that could be painted on Levi's entire hoof wall to keep it from chipping until healthy hoof grows out. You may have said in your other posts, but I don't remember right now; Levi's heel is so underslung looking...has the farrier tried to build it up with a pad? When our farrier shod our horse he not only put on a wedge and built up heel, but extended the shoe behind the hoof to help support new heel growth. I wish you luck. You've had quite a time with Levi. I still think he has the beautiful eyes and a sweet look. |

He keeps pushing the breakover back, and having him cut off the toe. The weird thing is the white line is no longer under the shoe, but out towards the front of the shoe. I will try to take a better picture tomorrow. The farrier was here today. Levi took off running after his trim. He still flips that left foot out when he takes off, but then trots around with no problem. |

I should go back and read your other posts. I'm glad Levi is running...he must be feeling pretty good. |

It is hard to see the crack you are talking about but I am assuming it is that broken out area toward the toe and near the ground. If is is trapping dirt the best thing to do would be have the farrier open it up and smooth it out to eliminate cracks and crevices that trap dirt. Until then it should be kept as clean and dry as is practical.DrO |
