I'm curious about the possible causes of a swollen udder in a 14 year old mare. She is not pregnant. The udder is swollen on one side only, is not hot or sensitive to touching. It does not seem to cause any discomfort and the swelling goes down dramatically after exercise. It's been this way for about two months. I've had my vet check her three times and he says it is edema but doesn't know what may have caused it. What could be some possible causes?

Karlene,

You might want to run a search and/or do some research into the phenomenon called "witches milk." My mare developed milk in her udders last Fall and she was NOT bred. Her last foal was born 5/2000. The udders were only slightly swollen and there was no discomfort. She had been used as a brood mare before I bought her - don't know if her body just is used to producing milk or what!

My other mare's heats are extreme in the Spring and Fall coming out of and going into anestrous. Maybe the hormonal changes are what triggers this milk production in this mare as she's bagging up a little again this Fall. (There's a chance she was bred so we're having the vet's out the end of next week to palpate her to know for sure. She doesn't look pregnant but she bagged up early with the last foal so it's anybody's guess right now.)

Good Luck to you.
