Some horses that were treated 1 week ago for an URI are supposed to be move to my barn in December. The vet did not confirm strangles but was treating them with an antibiotic that is supposed to be effective, so far there are not any abscesses.
I'm trying to get an update on the current health of these horses. (to see if they responded to the treatment) I'll let you know.
My question is how concerned should I be?
I read in another forum article that they should not be carriers after 30 days, but sometimes it is much longer.
I did not use the Intranasal Strangles vaccine this year because we do limited traveling and the barn population has been the same. If I choose to do this now, will it be effective in time?(understanding it's not a guarantee) Thanks!

If there are 30 days of wait, and you bathe them before they come, you have done all that is practical.
It takes two injections (shoot it up the nose) to start the IN Strangles vaccination, 3 weeks apart. To get protection probably takes a total of 6 weeks. If you gave this not much more than a year ago, one shot and 21 days should give you some protection.

Thanks Dr. O.
I'll definitely check to see if they plan to bathe. This makes me feel better.
