I just imported a 5 1/2 year old fresian gelding from the Netherlands. He arrived at our barn on Sunday after leaving the Newburgh quarantine center. After he arrived he did cough a few times.. Of a greater concern was that there appeared to be a heave line on either side of his rib cage when he coughed. Could this be anything else? Are there any tests we can do short of a vet check (which we plan to do) in order to be sure its heaves? |

I believe the heave line can be misleading and some horses just have prominent muscles along this ridge. After that much travel and association with new horses a cough and a upper respiratory track infection would not be unusual. For an asymptomatic horse a good physical and careful auscultation are your best tools but again this horse may have some low grade or lingering signs of a respiratory infection that may confuse the diagnosis for a while.
