I am not sure if this is appropriate for Horse Advice or not. If it is not I am most humbly sorry, please forgive my stupidity. I was just shopping at my local Petsmart that includes Stateline Tack and the sales person told me that as of this October Stateline Tack is out of Petsmart. I for one really depend on Stateline Tack as they have a large selection and they are open late. Countless horse owners in my area shop there for their horses. I think this will effect a large number of horse owners. I E-Mailed Petsmart to tell them how much I depend on Stateline and how much I spend there in hopes of changing their minds. I hope that other horse owners will do the same.

I do most of my tack shopping out of catalogs and we have neither a Petsmart or Stateline any where near us. I do like their catalog, though. I doubt your complaints will do much good as I'm sure the decision is based on "the bottom line." However, it doesn't hurt to try. Good luck.

We have a Stateline Petsmart near us and I have to say that it isn't great. I certainly can't rely on it to have even 10% of what I am looking for. I guess there is a letter on the website that mentions the fact that they are not really "horse" people, so they aren't doing a good job of knowing what the needs really are. Go to the website and check it out.

We have a Stateline Tack/Petsmart combo here south of Denver, and I do shop there frequently.

It seems to have better prices for some things - like de-wormer, daily de-wormer, and some tack items. They carry both English and Western gear, and the sales staff seem quite knowledgeable. I would be sorry to lose them.

Next time I am there I will ask them about it.

I never knew they were partners until I went to petsmart back in Rockaway NJ and they told me. I also have been a huge catalog shopper since for the last seven years we have lived in really remote areas that didn't have alot of shopping options. Write in however, it might start a chain reaction. Good Luck

As I understand it from one of the clerks at our local Petsmart which includes a soon to close Stateline section, some of the outlets did well and others did not. All Petsmarts will close their Stateline sections pretty shortly. The late hours were great as well as the one stop shopping for all our pets. IMO, however, the sections were poorly managed and had supply issues. Several local trainers I know tried their hand at running the equine department, but quit, because they never knew what was coming in on the next truck. Even basic items and supplements would be there one week and disappear the next and reappear six months later.
The concept is a great idea, but my hunch is that whoever is in charge at the corporate level doesn't have a good grasp of the equine market.

I learned the same thing this morning. The saleswoman said she thought they would try and unload what they have in stock over the next few months with the aim of being finished in August. I'm not happy since they are the only local store that carries English tack.

My impression from talking to the local salespeople is they had a single corporate-wide stocking policy. So, for example, fly-season would be declared over sometime in Sept. because that was the case back east. But no allowance was made for places like Tucson who still had another 2+ months of flies to contend with.

I dont want to sound selfish but I am happy that they are closing. I own a tack shop and it is hard to compete when they can sell certain items for less then I can buy them for (daily wormer, clipper blades, etc) I hope that every ones local shops will be able to take care of them.

Zoe, your tack shope is GORGEOUS!!! It looks like Marcus Neimann (sp?) for horses . . . and it looks like I wouldn't be able to afford it . . . but I'd go there to window shop for sure.

Thanks Holly,
We just went for an upscale look, but stock all the normal mid-range stuff :-) (Ariat, Rambo, Rhino etc)

I just found the local Stateline Tack in my area! Darn! Oh, well you can get good buys on the internet it's just the factor that you can't walk out of the store with it in your hand! Lovely tack shop, Zoe.

I am working on it :-) The cool thing is that we renovated the inside of a antique gambrel dairy barn and have our shop and horses in there. I think there may be more pics at www.secretlinkstables.com

Zoe,
What a beautiful store! Hope you get online soon.

Holly,
That's 'Nieman Marcus' you are referring to, and yes, Zoe's store does look that way.

When i moved out of Scottsdale to New Mexico - there were NO Horse stores around where I live - In to the big city (Santa Fe or Alberquerque) - I have found a feed store with a few things - like Psyllium and stuff but they are more expensive then what i can get thru the catalogs. Plus I ride english and western trail - Western here is not problem - but English? there is only one store in town that has that stuff. so Catalog again. But I LOVE STATELINE - When I was in Scottsdale it was almost s weekly stop for stuff. Even Feed Pellets! but now I have to use the SL Catalog - (but I do most of my shopping with Valley Vet as they provide Free Delivery on certain dollar amounts. And Mine are always over certain dollar amounts!!!! ) adn I use Dover for English stuff. the ups guy and I are on a first name basis!!!
