HI Dr. O,

My 4 yr old gelding is recovering from a 8cm long, 4cm wide, deep cut on his shoulder we believe was from a kick. Very clean, and we caught it very early, got stitches which lasted about 3 days. I've been doing daily hosing and nitrofuran spray with alushield on top to protect from flies. It's been 3 1/2 weeks and it's looking very good. But I'm not sure what is going on now. The wound is only about 2.5cm long and 1cm wide now and it appears to be scabbed up. The growth on it is slightly over the skin level. The daily hosing is not loosing it up at all. Am I looking at proud flesh? And should I be putting something on it to loosen up the tissue? I'm hoping for no scar.

Thanks for your help. Your articles on wound care have helped greatly.

Cece

Than you Cecelia, are you hosing using water under pressure?

From you description I can't really tell what is going on. There is an article on proud flesh and granulation tissue that describes it's appearance and characteristics in detail. Does it sound like what you are seeing. Could you post a good picture?

This is a shot taken today. Not sure on the proud flesh or not. The skin is tough so should I use something to soften it like vitamin e?

Thanks, Cece

This angle prevents us from telling if the granulation bed is exuberant or not. Your first posts suggest not. Otherwise this looks like a healthy wound to me otherwise and I would follow the recommendations in the article on wound care.
