I recently purchased a 5 year old Andalusian/Arab Cross. I have noticed that while he is in no way lame on any of his extremities, he does appear to have a fairly good sized, knot on the inside left front, fetlock. Where I believe the proximal sesamoid is located.

My question is, what is the best thing to do? Part of me is tempted to get all excited and do a boatload of stuff. The other part of me is tempted to write it off as a feature.

Any suggestions?

With so little information and not even knowing what is swollen for sure it is impossible to give accurate advice. Best advice would be have it looked at by the veterianarian, if it is an enlarged seamoid radiography (xrays) will be necassary to accurately prognose the future.

Dr. O -

Thank you for giving me the motivation to get this horse evaluated.

I was able to take him to my vet and get a set of fetlock x-rays. Come to find out, it looks as though the Left medial Sesamoid is just a tad bit wider than the Right Medial Sesamoid. According to my vet, it also appears to have perhaps had a previous mild sesamoiditis. Nothing that would prevent the horse from being a good performance prospect.

Thanks again for getting me motivated!

You are welcome Bobbi, so the knot was a slight bony enlargement of the sesamoid? This sounds easy to live with.
