Hi Dr O, I have a mare that aborted a foal at 250 days. She had shown evidence of placentitis prior to abortion, which we had been treating by putting her on SMZ and regumate. We sent foal and placenta off to be checked and they came back with strep as the offending bacteria. Mare retained a small piece of placenta at foaling. We flushed her daily with saline and betadine, infused her with tetracycline daily and kept her on banimine until she appeared clean. She is now 16 days post abortion. We did a routine cytology and culture on her before attempting to re-breed and the cytology showed a fungal infection. Culture was sent off to determine what it was sensitive to and we are now awaiting results. I have never dealt with a fungal infection and am wondering what to expect. Our vet says they are often difficult to treat. I would appreciate any infortmation you can give. Thanks, Kristin Clemons

Kristin,
Most common is Candida species and this likely an opportunistic infection secondary to the antimicrobial treatment. Though chronic fungal endometritis has a reputation for being difficult, we have had good luck in acute cases like this by using commercial over the counter products for humans with vaginal yeast infections. They use to contain miconazole. Once daily flush the uterus with warm saline till clear then treat with the miconazole. We treat until we get 3 straight days of no cloudy flushes.
