Hi, Dr.O. I have a friend that works at a vet clinic and they gave their spring shots 2 days ago, wnv included. Today the horse is walking circles, head pressing, don't seem to be able make rearend work, acting very colicky, penis contiually out, and has a flacid lip. He had vaccine and booster last year with no effects. This sure sounds like a wnv vaccine reaction. PLEASE explain to me how a horse gets wnv from a killed virus vaccine. This has always made me curious even if it isn't what it is. Also do you treat a vaccine reaction of this sort the same as the disease itself? If it makes a differenc he is a 7 yr. old saddlebred

Hello Diane,
These symptoms are not diagnostic for WNV. There are many conditions of horses that look like this so testing is necessary to diagnose this. However horses have gotten WNV even though vaccinated we believe the vaccine is 90% effective. 10% are still susceptible. Vaccine reations do not look like this so I do not know how to respond to how do you treat such vaccine reactions.

Hi, Dr.O. I'm not saying it is wnv matter a fact it is way to cold for skeeters right now. My question is (just out of curiosity) is it possible to get the disease from a killed virus vaccine? or to get the symptoms of it if not directly the disease. I have always wondered about this.

Well that is a bit like asking are people perfect? Mistakes are always possible. If what I learned in the past still holds the antigens in this vaccines are prepared from virus's inactivated with formaldehyde. There was an interesting report last year of a horse that contracted Eastern Equine Encephalitis following vaccination and that this disease had not been reported before in the area (California). It was stated in the report they actually were able to examine the vial of vaccine and found nothing wrong (?).

Other than this uncertain case, and you get the feeling the reporters believed it was the vaccine, I have not heard of any cases but it should underline an important point: don't vaccinate unless the disease represents a greater threat than the possible harm of the vaccine.
