This week I had my vet out to check two bumps on my 12 yo grey quarter horse mare - one small marble sized bump on her anus and one quarter sized bump on her vulva that was oozing(sp) pus.
She said that the bumps were melanomas and that it was just a "grey horse thing". When questioned she simply told me this was nothing to worry about. The vet prescribed 5 days of antibiotics for the oozing. Yesterday, I was looking closer at the affected area and noticed two more small ones on her anus and another one on her right thigh. I have read the article on melanomas (I am so grateful that I have found this website!!). My questions are:

1. Should I be treating these melanomas with Cimetidine?
2. Should I have them removed by surgery or cryo-surgery?

My vet was very uninformative about her condition.

Dr O - I would greatly appreciate your opinion.

Thanks.

Thanks for the kudos Terri. Considering they seem to be coming on quickly and sometimes removal seems to activate the remaining, I would try the cimetidine myself.

I have a 15 year old grey arab gelding whom over the last ten years I have had 5 non malignant melanomas removed. Over the last year I have watched a lump grow where the neck meets the shoulder. My vet aspirated the lump and the diagnoses is a melanoma in the subclavical lymph node. Without testing it, he (the vet) feels certain that it has metastisized. I have started 400 mg. cimetidine a day. It seems to me that you are recomending larger daily doses of the cimetidine. Would you recomend the larger dose of 1800 mg.s a day? Also, Alamo Pintado Vet. Clinic in California has recomended an anti-oxident product by Platinum Performance called Repress. Do you know anything about this product? What are your thoughts on this subject? Also, even though this horse is not showing any signs of distress or disease (other than the melanoma) I have considered retiring him from show to reduce stress in his life therefor possibly reducing risks to his health. My question is, do you recomend retiring him or do you think it would make any difference? Thank you so much for your input!! Antonya

Yes, in one UK study using lower doses they had a much lower success rate. What is the active ingredient in the product they recommend. Lastly nothing in your post suggests retirement as a neccesary course.
