Tuesday, the 8th, i had finished riding my coming 4 year old and put him in the trailer for his treats...(keeping him comfortable with the trailer) when he backed out he slipped and fell HARD on his knees/shins... his left shin hit the corner of my 'no slip 2X2 boards square and left skin on it.. i cold hosed him, dressed the abrasion and put him back out to pasture...that evening no heat/swelling or tenderness to touch but limping slightly... today i got him back out to ride him and noticed that he is still limping at the walk and at the trot, grade 3 lame...still no heat/swelling not painful to palpitate...

i did a flexion test on his knees to see if there was soreness there.. nothing... same with fetlocks.. nothing...

my questions are: could a stress fracture show no signs of swelling/heat or soreness to touch?

If by the 15th . 7 days later... should i just take him to the clinic for x-rays and not do the 'blocking' to see where the limp is coming from..? * i saw him fall hard so i know..*

horses can be sooo frustrating, wish they could just say... THERE .. that is where it hurts..

thanks Ann..

1) Yes
2) I cannot say whether waiting or not is judicious Ann. This is only 4 days later so you may still be seeing the results of bruising, but without an exam I cannot say. That is ditto with whether blocking might be necessary to localize the lameness. If the location of the pain in not evident on the exam, blocking may be indicated. Just brecause you saw where he hit does not mean he may not have strained a structue elsewhere. This again is a judgement that has to be made after an examination.

THANK YOU for your quick response, if by monday he is not any better i will have my local vet out to do the lameness evaluation and go from there...

he is too valuable of a friend and competitor to let this go tooo long undiagnosed..

thanks again... Ann
