DrO Please bear with me. "Perky" is a 17 years old maiden. I have been using the Calcium titration test which showed minimal (50 ppm) Ca on 4/2. She has never had a substantial bag and getting liquid out of it has been difficult. Perky has a history of stocking up overnight. After bringing her in on 4/7 her leg was so large it was weeping. She had a 102.5 temp. Vet recommended SMZ's BID, 30cc Gentomicin IV SID for 6 days, Banamine SID for 3 days and 2 grams of bute for just that first night. The two nights (4/7 and 4/8) we started the meds she was showing all the signs that foaling was imminent, except for having a decent bag. I only gave the banamine for two nights. I stopped the Gentomicin after 3 days and the SMZ's after 7 days. Her temp was normal the day after starting all of these drugs and was 98.5 this AM. We had the vet palpate her yesterday as we have not seen the foal move since April 7th. She said she had to "wake the foal up" and that s/he responded. I am concerned about this mare's lack of progression and the fact that her Calcium level dropped. Are there any red flags here that you see? Thank you for your time and expertise. ~Barbara Here's the miserable girl a couple of weeks ago. |

Oops, forgot to add that we have been able to get enough milk to test her Ca 3 x since 4/2 and it shows no Ca now. (Ca was 50 ppm on 4/2) ~B |

How many days pregnant is she and what type grass and hay is she eating. Have you quit putting her up at night? DrO |

DrO She is now 360 days and has been eating timothy with a little alfalfa in it. The grass is bahia with what's left of the Winter Rye. I am still bringing her in at night to watch. She doesn't move much when turned out. I had our other mare foal at 351 days without incident. ~B |

And today makes her 361 days.. ..with a small bag which I was able to test and she is still showing no Ca. Her legs are looking better, no fever either. |

Sorry, I am stressing over this old girl. The test I use is made by Chemetrics. I just tested her again and am just bearly able to get the 1 1/2 cc needed. Still no Calcium and a very small bag. It's seems the final test color is getting further and further away from the blue which she showed when she had Ca. Here's hoping the full moon works it's magic. Thanks ~Barbara

Red flags...the swelling so bad it was weeping serum with fever concerns me. Of course all the medication is not approved but has been used in pregnant mares without incidence. But it appears you have most of that under control. Is it imperative she comes in? The moving around is the best therapy for the legs. Have you spoke with your vet about a possible course of domperidone to encourage milk production? DrO |

DrO I am afraid to leave her out at night because it will be impossible to watch her. I figure at this stage of the pregnancy she must be close. I had asked my vet about Domperidone and she doesn't want to give it until the mare foals...... At this point would it be best to start her on it?? ~B |

What are the reasons your vet wants to wait? I can certainly understand your desire to watch and the thought you might catch a problem early during birth, but this potential problem must be balanced against the very real harm already being done by keeping her up. DrO |

DrO Thanks for the replies. I was unable to test her milk this AM. My vet is afraid to give it too early. Which at this late date doesn't make too much sense. I will leave her out unless I see some clear signs that she may foal. ~Barbara

UPDATE: Mare's bag drastically increased in size early day 366. Calcium was detected at 50 ppm at 7 AM. It steadily increased when checked at 6 PM and Midnight. Mare foaled at 6 AM today, day 367. All see well with mare and colt. What a relief. |

Congratulations! He is absolutely precious. I love his white stockings. Does he have them on his hind legs too? I would be very proud and quite relieved too that all has gone well. Susan B. |

Way ta go Perky! And congratulations Barbara! How relieved you must be. I have been following this thread looking for good news and each day, especially looking between the 17th of April and today. When you didn't post I even started to worry for you and Perky and I don't even know either of you! I even did some reading on calcium levels of pregnant mares that are overdue and I don't even have a pregnant mare!!!!What a nice surprise when I checked for new posts this afternoon to see the picture of your precious new foal! It's a great day! Here's wishing you continued good health for your mare and foal....and you too of course! |

Whew! I'm new here, but have been checking every day! I had a surprise foal 3 weeks ago -- had the mare 10 months and only began to suspect 8 days before birth. I can't imagine having to wait 366 days!!!! My first foal, so I'm all over this site trying to learn more. |

Thanks everyone for being worried and now thrilled with me. It was a long wait. Just had my first nights sleep in a couple of weeks and am starting to feel human again. Susan, he does have four white socks. ~Barbara |
