Posted on Sunday, Mar 25, 2007 - 11:28 pm: Hi Dr O,A couple of hours ago, I noticed that my mare Hanah, has a bluish white mark in her left eye. The mark is almost in the center of her eye horizontally, and is just above her lower eyelid. The mark appears to be on the outermost surface of her eye ball (the mark is not convex or concave). It is sort of an oval shape and is about ¼” by ⅛”. There is no redness, swelling or watering of the eye, but she is squinting a little. It might be a bit sore as she wants to turn her head when I try to examine it (however, she doesn’t want me examining the other eye either...). There is a bit of a goober in the corner of her eye, but there is some in the other as well, which all looks like the normal stuff that collects in the corners of horses eyes. Her sight doesn’t appear to be affected and everything else about her appears normal. My usual vet is away and I have left a message for another one to call me. In the meantime, do you have any advice or thoughts to offer? Thanx, Lee C |

Posted on Tuesday, Mar 27, 2007 - 12:23 am: My vet gave me ointment to put in Hanah’s eye. I am to pull down her lower lid and instill a ½” strip of the ointment along the inside of the lid every 8 hours. Well, Hanah stands perfectly still and does not move her head, but wow, strong eyelid muscles! My husband was helping me and we could not pry any part of her eye open, lids or otherwise, once she clamped it shut! Help! Any advice on pulling a horse’s bottom eyelid down would be so greatly appreciated!Thanx, Lee C |

Posted on Tuesday, Mar 27, 2007 - 7:52 am: What did the veterinarian diagnose Lee and what are you instilling into the eye?If the horse clamps tightly shut I don't attempt to separate the lids for the reasons you describe. Instead I stick the tip of the tube about 1/4 inch into the lateral (outside) corner and directing the tube into the pouch between the eyeball and the eyesocket. I rest my hand on the skull as I do this so if the horse jumps my hand moves with the horse. If treatment continues to be a problem you may need a indwelling eye catheter installed. Someone on these boards recently posted a picture of one that a search should turn up. DrO |

Posted on Tuesday, Mar 27, 2007 - 10:28 am: Hi Dr. O,Thank you so much for the advice on applying the ointment – it worked like a charm this morning! Her eye actually looked way better this AM, unless I’m just seeing what I want to see... She has a small scratch on the cornea. The ointment is called BNP – it has a few different ingredients (Bacitracin Zinc, Neomycin Sulfate, Polymyxin B Sulfate). The vet will be up again on Friday to do teeth, so will re-check it then. In the meantime, I’m to call her if it worsens (discharge, swelling etc.). Thank you again for your help, Lee C |
