Introduction
Granulosa Cell Tumors or Granulosa-Theca-Cell Tumors are the most common tumors of ovaries of horses. Though rarely malignant they are usually hormonally active and can cause behavioral abnormalities in mares. Though some have characteristic, enlargement and appearance on ultrasound, it is frequent for the ovary to be pretty close to normal. This article discusses proper diagnosis of this problem and treatment in equines.
Clinical Signs
GCT are usually suspected due to behavioral changes in the mare. One of three changes is usually seen:
- Prolonged anestrus, the mare does not cycle
- Irregular or prolonged estrus and nymphomania
- Stallion like behavior
