Dr.O, I'm not sure if this should go under skin or eyes? A friend's chestnut gelding has increasing areas of unpigmented skin spreading around both eyes, starting from the inner corners. There seems to be no itchiness or discharge, just a balder and balder look. Is this anything serious, and is there any way of treating it?

Hello Lynn,
I try not to deal with horses second hand. First it is hard to get all the background information correct and second I have a limited time to devote here so I prefer spending it on member's problems. In general if the horse is healthy otherwise this is probably not a big deal but the only way to be sure is a thorough exam and history review.

Hi Lynn,
I read your post concerning the loss of pigment around the eyes of your friends horse. I have had the same problem and after much research I solved it. Due to the length of what I would need to tell you from my experience, please contact me by email to chees@bellsouth.net. Marti

Marti,
I would be interested in your solution, but you must understand there are many causes of pigment loss in the skin. Some are treatable so that further pigment is not loss, some untreatable no matter what you do, and lastly some horses spontaneously develop pigment loss for a seson or two then have it spontaneously regress. Be careful about painting too broad a picture with a single treatment.

Sorry Dr.O. re asking on friend's behalf (just thought I'd seen it done in other posts). Thanks anyway. I've told her to become a member a.s.a.p.!

Marti - thanks very much for your input. I'll pass your email address on to my friend, bearing in mind Dr.O's comments on the many different causes.
