I have just had my horse scoped by the vet due to noisy breathing during exercise. This has just started this spring. He is a gray horse with melanomas under his tail and in his mouth. During the scope no abnormalities were found throughout except for the following. Past the larynx 4 small nodules resembling blisters were found in a line. No irritation or discharge was near them. In the gutteral pouch, the vet gave me a chance to view what I would describe as bruise colored adnormalities behind the membrane of the pouch. In other words under a layer since we could see the veins over the dark area. My vet suggested the possibility of the melanoma reaching this area but that it was rare. He is referring me to another equine hospital for further info. What information do you have regarding similar cases. The horse has been on herbs to reduce or stop melanomas and it has been successful on the ones underneath the tail.

Without a diagnosis we cannot compare your horse with other cases. I think the vet is incorrect about the frequency of melanomas in the throat area: I have seen several horses with melanomas in this area some quiet extensive and deep to the skin, not cutaneous. However they were always palpable from the outside as subcutaneous nodules.
