My foal was born on Mar 12th and has been energetic and healthy until Wednesday last week. By Thursday evening he was not nursing and was lying down most of the time... When the others left to go another paddock and he remained behind, I immediately brought he and his mother inside to a stall. His temperature was 102.9 . On the advice of my vet I administered penicillen, bute, pepto bismol, and infant liquid electrolites. He took about 8 ounces.
His temperature went down, he started nursing and eating. I kept him inside until Saturday. He spent most of the day outside, grazing and nursing.
Why I'm concerned is that he is still lethargic. I'm concerned that I'm missing something. His energy level is so much lower. The only other bit of info is that this foal still has a very heavy coat and has been wormed at 2 and 3 months. Also looks a bit gutty to me.

Thanks for any ideas.
Joanne

Lethargy is a general symptom that can be caused by many diseases, best is to have the vet come out and examine this little guy so if a specific therapy is required it is not missed. Number one on my list is the possiblity that the infection was not that completely responsive to the penicillin alone as most foal infections are not, for more on this see » Equine Diseases » Foal Diseases » Foal Septicemia: Gram Negative Blood Infections.
