I have a quarter horse mare who has been stiff and sore since March. At one point her stiffles were so sore she was dragging her back legs. The vets checked her several times with no ideas except to give her bute for the pain. Two weeks ago I had another vet draw blood and check it for Lymes and anything else unusual. The Lymes came back positive the blood work showed border line anemia.
I have been treating her with 60cc of Penicellin daily for eight days, after four days she showed a marked improvement, but has gone down hill again from there. She is now showing lameness, a fever 101, and is listless. The third vet suggested giving Doxycycline would this be a good choice and what is the correct dosage for a 1200lb horse. Is there any resources you can direct me to that could give me some help. I know a lot of vets do not believe horses can get lymes but we have had several cases in our area, along with many dog and human cases. Diana

Horses do contract Lymes (Borrelia burgdorferi) but what we have been able to demonstrate that they show symptoms of disease, for more on this and doxycycline see » Equine Diseases » Fever of Unknown Origin » Lymes Disease » Lyme disease.
