I have a 6 year old Standardbred gelding who one week ago developed a sore right eye. His eyelid became a bit swollen and his eye was teary. I also noticed that his eye was a bit cloudy right at the corner, in a 1/4 moon shape. Vagabond has no physical signs of injury. He has been treated with polysporin eye ointment and bute (2 grams 3 times a day). I also have put on a fly mask to keep the bright sun light out of his eyes. Today (7 days later) his eyelid is still a bit swollen, it is less teary, the cloudiness is the same, but now he has a white dotted line in the corner of his eye, in the same crescent shape as the cloudiness. The white line is about 2mm in thickness at the thickest part, and is about 1 and 1/2 cm long. I live in a remote area and the vet will be seeing him in one week from now. I have listened to treatment instructions from her after describing the problem over the phone. Can you please tell me what the white line might be, and if I should be doing something else for him. |

Hello Linda, I am unsure which structure of the eye or eye ball that you are seeing the white line on. DrO |

Hi, It is just inside the cornea but close to the outer edge of the cornea, sort of following around the contour of the cornea. It is near the inside corner of his eye. I hope this gives you a better idea of where it is. Today the cloudiness seems to be not as prominent. The white line is less prominent also. The horse is also seems more comfortable and is not holding his eye half closed. Thanks. Linda..

Horses have a tiny bluish ring that follows the outer edge of the cornea. In some horses this is prominent in others you cannot see it at all, I wonder if you are just noticing this and if the corneal edema might be causing it to appear "broken up"? Witout actually seeing it it is hard to say. Congratulations on things looking better. DrO |

Hi, It isn't the bluish ring you are speaking of. I can see that as well as the white part. The white part developed only since the cloudiness has. In the last few days it has changed and the white has become more diffused, so the edges of the white area are not as well defined as they were before. Someone suggested it might be scar tissue. Could that be possible? Linda

No, it takes months for scar tissue to develope, and this may happen with time but more likely edema that will resolve. The question is do you have an ongoing problem, your recent report suggests not, but this should be answered by someone who can see the eye. DrO |
