We recently "rescued" a 9 year old TB mare who was reportedly in foal to a TB stallion. The whole situation was rather sketchy as the owner said the mare hadn't been confirmed pregnant by a vet, but the owner was certain she was in foal because the stallion had been ignoring the mare lately. Of course we didn't take this for gospel and once we got her home, immediately had our vet out for a pregnancy check. He said she was not in foal and that she had a follicle on her right ovary. He did a "reproductive exam" checking internally and externally for reasons which would prevent her from becoming pregnant and he found none. He didn't do a culture, but did do a biopsy - the results of which are still pending. He advised to give Lutalyse and go ahead and try to breed her.
We gave Lutalyse on Thursday evening and transported the mare to the stallion on Friday morning. As of Sunday evening, she was still not showing any signs of heat. The stallion owner gave her another shot of Lutalyse this morning.
I have read all the articles on reproduction / disease / Lutalyse and I don't seem to see anything that says that multiple shots are standard. Is this a common practice, why would one shot not have brought her into season. Should we be concerned about multiple doses?

Thanks

Hello Lisa,
The first paragraph under the "Dosage" Heading of the article on Lutalyse (» Equine Medications and Nutriceuticals » Reproductive Drugs » Dinoprost, Lutalyse, Synchrocept) explains why a single dose may not work in a healthy mare. Multiple doses are OK.

Thanks Dr. O. I've been in touch with the breeder and she has now had 3 shots spaced 2 days apart and has still failed to cycle. Like I mentioned before, she didn't have a cytology done, but my vet said she was not pregnant. He said that her left ovary and left side of her uterus was flacid, but she had a follicle on her right ovary. I'm now understanding that they can have a follicle and still be pregnant - am I understanding this correctly? If she's pregnant already - and we've given her Lutalyse, I also understand that she'll abort if it's an early pregnancy. This is terribly upsetting, but what we've done upon the guidance of our veterinarian can't be undone. Are there any outward signs of abortion? How long after a mare aborts will she cycle again? Should she be bred on the next cycle after an abortion?

Not only are follicles normal but it is normal for a mare to ovulate during pregnancy, these new CL's are important because they release progesterone to maintain the pregnancy the first 100 days.
