On Aug. 21, I noticed that my 17 year old Morgan mare was a little lame when I rode her on a 20 meter circle at a trot. She was due that afternoon for a trim. When the farrier came out, he said she had a bruise. I watched him cut/work on her right front frog--it then bled. By the time he finished trimming her back feet, the bleeding had stopped and he said I didn't need to do anything further about it. She'd even be fine to ride. When I asked him if it could be anything other than a bruise, he said no. It's now Aug.31 and she still acts ouchy when I press on that frog. There is also a lip or skin around that part of the frog, like maybe part of it is shedding off. She still does not feel completely sound when I ride her. Does this sound like a bruise? I searched the site and couldn't find anything about a bruise of the frog. How long will it take for her to feel better? Is there anything I should be doing for her? Thank you!

Since we do not know what the farrier did to diagnose the bruise we do not know if this is likely to be a bruise or not but no matter what he found there are other possiblities. Frog bruises are the same as sole bruises and you will find information on those in the article associated with this forum. Click on » Hoof Abscesses, Bruises, and Gravels » above and read the article in the window.

Dr.O
THANK YOU. I will read that info--didn't know frog and sole bruises were the same.
