My 23 yr old mare, still nursing 4 month old, choked on hay this morning. She's been extra hungry lately and when I go to feed her, she's excited to get her food. I usually give her alfalfa hay first and then senior/mare & foal mix. She's also at pasture. I gave her and the colt a 1/2 flake of hay and walked away for about 2 minutes. When I walked up to her, she wasn't eating. She's also a cribber, so I took off the crib collar and she started coughing. It's been several hours, she's got mucus dripping from her nose and mouth, and she's not eating. We tried the hose down her throat which caused her to cough some stuff out. She seems a little less stressed. But some of the mucus had some blood. I'm waiting for the vet to come in a couple of hours. Since there was blood should I be concerned about a tear in the eshophogus? And what should she be fed after this? Thanks

These are questions for someone who can examine the horse and the situation Cece. Following an uncomplicated episode the horses are generally returned to their regular feed. However if gorging is the reason for the choke, that needs to be addressed with some management changes.
