I just saw my mare for the first time in a few months yesterday after she had been away for embryo transfer.
I noticed a smell like rotten meat, but figured there was no way it could have been coming from her. I now wonder if that smell could have been coming from her mouth? She is not eating well at all and has lost a lot of weight. I figured it was because she had not been allowed to be turned out with other horses while at the breeding facility (she runs the fence when she is alone). Now, I am worried she may have something going on in her mouth. I am trying to find the number of our dentist as both mine need done anyway, but in the mean time, what can I do to figure out what is going on? I can't imagine she will stand there and let me poke around her mouth, even if there isn't any problem in there. I have a flashlight ready.
Is the smell I described what the odor in the article mentions?

Alicia, the smell of rotting trapped food and/or infected tissue in the mouth can be very bad. And while some might compare it to rotting meat whether this is what you smelled is hard for me to say.
