Our 9 month old QH filly has in the last 24 hrs been displaying "heat" symptoms. I am assuming that as we are in the beginning days of November (currently minus 2 degrees Celcius outside) and her young age that it is doubtful that she is in season but rather perhaps a bladder/urinary tract infection or such? She does urinate normally but in between I notice she lifts her tail high and squats and dribbles a bit and "winks". At this time her tails is noticably higher that when she has a normal urination. I was thinking of starting her on a series of Sulpha tablets twice a day just to be sure? Any further thoughts? Thanks! |

This is not uncommon behavior Dave for a young filly and bladder infections are rare in horses. Better would be collect some of the urine fresh in a clean sealable container, put it in a cooler with a little ice, and run it to your local vet for evaluation rather than expose your horse to the antibiotics needlessly, for more on why see » Equine Medications and Nutriceuticals » Antibiotics and Antimicrobials » Antibiotic Use in Horses: An Overview.
