Equine & Horse Advice: Founder & Laminitis

There are two terms used for one of the oldest diseases described in horses: founder and laminitis. Though the scientific folk use the term “laminitis”, everyone is pretty sure the initial event, the cause of the disease, is not inflammation of the laminae. For this reason we prefer the older term, founder however we will use the terms interchangeably in these articles and they both mean the same thing here.

Despite the fact we have recognized this disease in horses for over 2000 years it really wasn't until the 21st century that we have begun to understand the complicated events that cause this disease.
