4 year old paint gelding has developed a curious habit of eating moss out of pond. He looks like he's grazing out in the middle of the pond .. about knee deep. Has shown no signs of health problems but am wondering about potential problems developing. Has anyone else experienced this?

We do not know of any problems this might cause but this is quite unusual: there may be a problem that just has not been reported yet. We have an article on horses eating unusual things that might give you some clues as to why your horse may be doing this and what you might do about it, see » Care for Horses » Nutrition » Pica: Horses Eating Inappropriate Materials.

We have two mares that keep doing this for years with no consequences whatsoever. They are both unbelievably healthy animals.
I was worried in the beginning, but I see no reason now to stop them from having their little "snack".
But there may be differences from moss to moss, I would be careful if it was a new habit.
