Dr. O:
I have been treating a recurring case of hives in my 4yo AQHA mare since mid April. My vet says they are seasonal in nature and should stop when things stop blooming. He gave me dexamethasone to administer when she breaks out and directed me to some OTC equine antihistamines to prevent breakouts.

The OTC product, Hist-All, has not stopped the breakouts. I wish to try treating her with benedryl, in its place. I read your article on calculating the dosage and understand that 2mg of benedryl for a 1200# horse would be ten 25mg tablets. What is not clear to me is how frequently I can repeat this dosage. Once per 24 hrs? 2 per 24 hrs, etc?

Welcome bbm85650,
The dosage including the frequency is in the third bullet under the treatment section. Perhaps you don't recognize the generic name of "Benadryl" as "diphenhydramine". They are the same but you will probably find the generics much cheaper. I do wonder if prednisolone tablets every other or third day might not be cheaper and more effective as a preventive.

Your dosage calculation seems a bit off. If we say a 1200 lb horse is 500 kg that makes the dosage range 500 to 1000 mg which for 25 mg tablets would be 20 to 40 tablets. Let me also say that the cause of your hives remains unknown and though it is possibly some plant be sure to carefully consider all the possible things that the horse comes into contact with that you have control over. See the article for more on this.

Thank you for correcting the dosage. Math was never my forte! LOL

We did try to see if there was any change to her condition by elimination of each of the items in her diet, on a one by one basis over the period of a month. No change was noted to the severity or frequency of the outbreaks. I even switched the location where I buy her hay, thinking the new feedstore might have a better quality product.

I will request the prednisolone from my vet as soon as he returns to his office.
