My mare has been on Regumate to maintain her pregnancy. She is now 9 months. When should I take her off of it? Should I wait until day 340? I would welcome some discussion

Dr. O, Ssorry it has taken me so long to get back to you. My computer at home is not working. My mare resorbed a foal at about 45 days gestation last year. This year as soon as pregnancy was confirmed with ultrasound at 30 days we started her on it. I kept her on it because I was afraid she would lose this foal too. She has had two foals in the past but I don't know anything about her reproductive history because the person I bought her from did't do the breeding. DO I keep her on the Regumate until 340 days?

We do not believe that primary progesterone insufficiency is actually a cause of early embryonic loss in mares, for more on this see Equine Diseases » Reproductive Diseases » Problems Keeping Mares Pregnant »
Progesterone, Alternogest, and Regumate Use in Horses
. However even for those who do believe this occurs there is no need to supplement beyond day 100 when the placenta takes over the task of producing progestins from the CL's. So there is no need now but what happens when you remove a mare who has been on it a long time is a poorly studied event . I would consult my veterinarian for his suggestion as this may be something he does frequently. Baring any other advice I would remove it slowly now by reducing it by 1/4 (2.5 cc if she is getting 10cc) every 2 weeks.

Thank you very much for your advice. If I start now, I will have her off of the Regumate by the week before her due date. Thanks again.

Sharyl, speed it up just a little to have her off of it by day 320.
