I have a 9 yo arabian mare who gets painful when in heat. She cycles often but within normal range. She has had an extensive workup. The problem is the pain which results in 1)pain from other areas that results in abnormal motility and gas accumulation and then gas colic. I came up with the idea to use "Devils Claw plus" by Uckele which is an herbal intiinflamatory. Since the doctor just has me giving banamine shots when in pain. But I am not always at the barn to see she is in pain. so I thought the maintence dose would help to keep inflammation and pain away and work as a preventative. Do you see any harm in trying this? Thanks

Thanks Dr. O. I guess I was also looking for any experience any one had trying it with painful cycles. It seems the other discussions are primarily on arthritsis. Thanks

Sandra,
My mare has painful heats too. Her's are caused by lumpy ovaries. I usually try to start her on Bute before her heat starts, and that works. If I don't start in time, she is in pain for about 2 days. I then have to use banamine. I am breeding her this year, and am looking forward to no pain for her!
Another way you can help is by stopping heat altogether. Depo provera worked for me on my mare. Not cheap, though.

Thanks Alicia. I tried aa hormone shot and a hormone implant, but they did not work. the banamine does the trick for the pain but I too can not always catch it in time.that is why I was thinking of using the dc as a preventative. she is a frequent cycler. She even has cycles in the winter! good luck on your breeding.

If you just want to stop the mare's heat cycles there is a procedure I read about that they are doing back east, I believe. They insert a glass marble 30mm big into the uterus and as long as it stays in there, the mare does not cycle. When you want her to cycle for breeding, the vet removes it. It sounded bizarre but the vet that wrote the paper said it does work. It might be worth a try. I am trying to find the article but haven't found it yet. We have a filly in race training that was nasty when she was in heat and so that is why I saved the article. We are going to try that on her. Anyone else see the write up on it? EO

I have talked online to a woman that had the marble (stainless) inserted in her mare last year and although it did not completely get rid of the mare's heat behavior, it lessened the symptoms enough to ignore them.

I also want to try this on my 14 yr QH mare. She gets unmanageable at times in the Spring/Early Summer due to her heat cycle. I trail ride and whe you live in Minnesota, you need to enjoy all riding days available. She can not settle down (for saddling or mounting)when she is at her worst in heat. At other times people comment on what a well behaved trail horse she is - not when in heat though.

I know they discussed different ones and came to the conclusion that glass ones, 30mm in size had the best results. That, I do remember. EO

Run a search on "marble", you will find other discussions on this.
